Hey guys

i only got my macbook (lowest spec) last week, but im having a problem with X11 already. basically i downloaded Open Office a couple of days ago and it needs X11 to run, so i installed it from the Install disc which came with the comp. but now, whenever i open 'open office' or X11 on its own, there comes a black+white chequed background and the dock and the menu bar at the top disappear. while i can close the xterm box of x11, i cnt actually close x11, unless i force quit.

can ne1 help me?

Sounds like it's trying to run full screen without a window manager. Do you have an .xinitrc file in your home folder? ( should be invisible)

erm i dont think so, though my search seemed very crude. i used the find dialogue box from the finder, and searched for an invisible file, etc. but no is the answer i think. is this the problem?

There's a Full Screen option in X11's preferences (if I remember correctly) - turn this off and restart it. That should do it.

I judge you when you use poor grammar.

I can't access the preferences at all though, that's the problem. As soon as X11 is open, all i can do is force quit it, and i can't access the dock, desktop, or finder bar.

It sounds like you have another problem then. I can't help much as I don't have X1 installed. Look up repairing permissions and try a tool like Onyx to run some maintenance.

Scrap that, I've found the .xinitrc file, but I wonder if the quartz-wm doesn't exist/can't be found. I found it in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (but no . ?) I hope this helps someone help me!

Do not delete the one in /etc. X11 will quit working if you do.
When you start X11, press command-shift-A..you will shift back to the Finder...the menubar should still say X11.
You can get to the preferences there.
