I wouldn't use Windows media player. Its terrible with Mac.

Try this:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

VLC Media Player for Mac.
Plays everything I need.

I have Flip4Mac installed too, allows you to play Windows Media (or whatever the format is) on your Mac.

You can find Flip 4 Mac here: http://www.flip4mac.com/

Perian is pretty popular too!
Here: http://perian.org/

If you install Flip4Mac & VLC Media Player that should cover you.
