Hi, when i plug my camera into my mbp, and iPhoto opens, how do i select individual pictures to be saved. all i get is the option to download the whole camera onto my mbp. Any suggestions.

you can't do it in iphoto. if you open up image capture you can select photos

or if your camera shows up in the finder you can open it and just drag the files/photos you want from your camera onto the iphoto icon on the dock and it will only import the photos you drag.
