firstly, quicktime will not play .avi files straight after you download or install it. You require plugins to allow quicktime to play these files. Perian and Divx should allow you to play almost all .avi files in quicktime. If you don't have these yet, there's probably no chance of powerpoint playing avi files if it states quicktime is required. Simply putting quicktime (did you mean the application??) inside the folder for your work won't do a thing.
I don't use powerpoint at all, so I can't give any other advise. Just ensure you have the plugins mentioned above, and see if that makes any difference. Alternatively, you could convert the movie to .mpg or .mov or another quicktime friendly format. Since .avi isn't a native quicktime format, there are bound to be problems. It's like trying to open a photoshop file in excel
