I'm going to be upgrading from iPhoto 04 to iPhoto 06 on a G5 iMac and I wanted to know if there's anything I should prepare for besides backing up my photos?

I strongly advise you to backup your iPhoto Library before the upgrade. This is the least you can do and the most important to protect against data loss.

Your existing iPhoto Library folder is located in your Pictures folder.
