I bought my Macbook through my school and it came with .Mac as part of the software bundle. I was told the account will expire if you don't use it after a certain time after your purchase. I was wondering what the program does because I am about to just give it away or something.

Thanks,
js

Hi yosehb.

Unless you paid for it, it's only a demo good for a trail period of 60 days. Anyone can register for this trial by going to Apple's .Mac website.

If you paid for it, it's good for a year even if you never use it.

There are some great tutorials, free software (backup is one of them) and the ability to sync your computer with your .mac acct., that in itself is worth it to me. The cost is about $100 I think...

.mac is actually a service, but it includes some software you can download. Go here for an overview:

http://www.apple.com/dotmac/

I use .mac, and one of the things I like is the backup s/w. I use it in conjunction with an external hard drive. Backups are real easy with the tool. Yes there are probably other tools and maybe even better tools, but this does exactly what I need.

With .mac you also get an email account w/ 7 names, some GarageBand files, web hosting, and iDisk.

(I had a break while writing this, and others have responded. I'll post this "as is".)

I got my Macbook through my schools College of Education. It came with Office, iWork, iLife, Inspiration, Kidspiration, Quicktime Pro, a year .Mac account, and a mini DVI to VGA adapter for a grand. I bought it in late September and still haven't figured everything out software wise.

I rely mostly on Office, so I don't think .Mac would benefit me. I think I'll give it to one of my friends in fashion design at Parsons. I think it'll suit their needs more than mine.

Thanks for the input guys.
