Ho does win rar work for OSX? after I download it I get a bunch of tar files, not sure how I use this to unzip my files.

My belief is that being a windows program, winrar will not run on Macs...I could be wrong

winrar does not work on Macs. You can, however, extract rar files just fine by using Macrar (although I generally end up using MacPAR, because most of the rar files I download come from newsgroups and have .par files for reconstructing partially incomplete files).
