I remember there was a shareware that allowed you to record whatever your screen was showing, as a movie. There's a chance it allowed you to click and drag to define a recordable space. *searches for link*

Here's the one I was talking about. Personally, I think it's overpriced...

Haven't been able to test them out, but those seemed to be the best of the results I found. I just searched for 'screen capture' at versiontracker.com
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a freeware version of anything like this.

Nothing free, at least none I have ever seen
I use Conference Recorder to record video chats.
I only paid about $15 for it, and it looks like it is on sale now for a few dollars less.
