Hey, I've been looking around for a new broswer as I feel that Safari is a little slow sometimes in the page loading department for some reason.

I was wondering if Opera was just as safe as Safari to use.

Thanx,
JP

The fastest one I have EVER used on any platform is SunriseBrowser. It just screams. However, it doesn't support tabbed browsing yet.

My Macs: PowerMac G5 Quad, 2.5 GHz, 4 Core, Mac Pro, 3.2 GHz 8 Core, Power Macintosh 7500/100
My iStuff: 32 GB iPhone 4, 30 GB iPod Video, 16 GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Leopard, Mac OS 8.6, openSUSE 10.3, Win XP

I used Opera for years before switching to Mac - since then I have used Safari. Opera is a good browser but you almost have to "rethink" how you do things with it because it is so different. I had to make a commitment to myself to use it for one solid month. At the end of the month I was hooked on it. I also am keeping an eye on Sunrise - it is one faaaassssstttt browser.

Step 1: Quit Safari.

Step 2: Open ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist with Property List Editor.

Step 3: Adjust "WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay" so that the class is "Number" and the value is 0.25.

Step 4: Adjust "WebkitResourceTimedLayoutDelay" so that the class is "Number" and the value is 0.0001.

Step 5: SAVE and QUIT Property list editor.

Step 6: Open Safari.

Step 7: Go to http://nightly.webkit.org/ and click the big Webkit button at the top to download Webkit, and then copy it (but not the other app that comes with it) to your Applications folder.

Step 8: Enjoy the Webkit nightly, a snappier and more accurate renderer of webpages than Safari.

CAUTION: Some Webkit nightly builds are less stable than others. If you feel uncomfortable using a nightly, just do Steps 1-5. This will make your Safari feel considerably snappier since it reduces the initial page load delay down to its minimum value and increases the rate at which your computer updates the screen with what has been rendered.

If you still think you'd prefer Opera, it's a perfectly capable browser that is actually faster than Safari at most things. Make sure to enable more max connections for the pipelining under the "Advanced" tab in Opera preferences if you go that route!

I have used Netscape, IE, Firefox, and Safari. I will probably never lose Safari, I absolutely cannot stand Firefox, I can't use it without getting agitated. I may try that SunriseBrowser. IMO, Firefox is the most irritating one to use after using Safari, to me it's like running a little bit of a PC on a Mac. Thank you for all those links novicew, they were helpful to me also.

No iMac.
