What do you mean when you say "never responds"? No Mail window ever opens up, or it never connects to your ISP and downloads email?

If you never see a Mail window, try opening Mail.app directly from your Applications folder vs. from the Dock. Does this make any difference? If it does, there may be something wrong with your Dock icon. Drag and drop it to your desktop, where it will vanish in an amusing puff of smoke. Now drag a fresh copy to your Dock from the Applications folder and all should be well.

My iStuff: 32 GB iPhone 4, 30 GB iPod Video, 16 GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Leopard, Mac OS 8.6, openSUSE 10.3, Win XP

Do you have .mac or another provider? Maybe it's with them.

Have you recently changed ISPs and it is trying to download mail from an account that doesn't work anymore? Are you able to verify that your account set up is correct - see Mail, Preferences, Accounts - or does it not allow you get even this far?

I had a problem like this when I recently changed ISPs. It wasn't exactly the same problem, but since I use all of Thunderbird, Mail, GNUMail and Entourage, I kept bumping into it over and over!
