Adium and Google chat

So i followed google's setup for adium and gchat, and i can see people who are logged on under gmail, and they can see me too, as well as IM me, but i can't reply back, or start a new chat with them. i click on a friend of mine who i'm positive is logged on, and type something then try to send it, and nothing happens. Has anyone seen this before? thanks for the help.
