They could be Chinese or Japanese charachters, but they are in the title (grey bar) when I put in a newly purchased DVD from Amazon (Cars) for my son. Not a huge deal as the movie still plays, but it is a quirk that I would like to fix as in my mind my new Mac Mini (1.8, intel, 1.5 gig, 120 gig) should be perfect.

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction for my stupidness.

I'm sure it is perfect. The issue seems to be with the DVD app you are using. :black:
Can you post a screenshot of this? I have never heard of this before. If it only happens when you play that DVD, then the issue isn't with your Mac or its OS, but rather an issue with the DVD you purchase.
Either way, a screenshot may shed more light on this.

hmm, well if the DVD originated from that region, then it would seem likely that it would be named in that language.

Does the back of the DVD show a region code?
Just be sure you bought a legitimate copy there. If the english subtitles are wacky, you can be sure it's not.

is not an issue of subtitles, this is the Title of the movie that is displayed in the title bar when viewing a movie in a window. DVD Player has "Viewer" here when you do not have a DVD in the drive.

Also, is not an issue of an illegitimate copy. Have at least one DVD from each of the following sources which display the same: Netflix, Circuit City, Amazon, and Best Buy.

Have seen several DVD's with Japanese in the title bar. It probably has to do with where they are pressed (my guess is there is one person in their employment that is forgetting to change this one item when moving from Japanese to English prior to pressing).

Cars - does the same on mine - just tossed in my current Netflix batch and "The Break Up" does also.
Also, did not notice this until after I removed all languages except English from my system using monolingual. I kinda doubt that has anything to do with it, just hadn't put that many DVD's into this new machine until after that.

edit: Just put one of these in my windows box to check it out. None of the programs I tried (VLC, Wind Media Player, ATI DVD player, or Nero's DVD player) display the title of the movie the way Apple's DVD player does. Also, checked it out on DVD shrink, DVD Decryptor, DVDFab Decryptor; and all of them display the title in english. This leads me to believe it is the location on the DVD that DVD Player pulls this info from rather than anything else.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus.

After all was said and done, I went into the display options for the DVD (I think) and saw the characters in an editable field. I changed it to CARS and the next time I put the DVD in it worked fine.

Anyway - thanks to all.

I didn't mean to state it was a problem with the subs - I just thought it odd that a western movie would have a title in Chinese or Japanese. Thinking that, I thought I better touch on the possibility that it might not have been a legit DVD. Not everyone can tell by looking at the disc, so the added subs in english are often a dead giveaway. I didn't mean to imply that that's what the problem was - just something I'd be cautious of.

Lucky you didn't get this version of Star Wars, episode iii, the backstroke of the west. (Lotsa screenshots so it takes a while to load...)

haha, that's PRECISELY the DVD I had in mind when bringing that subject up. I saw those screens some time back - had a really good laugh too.
