Hello I am new to mac and the mac operating system , hopefully some of you can help awnser a few of my questions.

I run alot of graphic programs such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash etc . These program are running very slow in OSX is this normal? I am running a brand new MBP 2 duo 17 inch 2GB of ram and it takes 10 seconds just to fire up dreamweaver! Thats with nothing else loaded!

Coming from windows, a computer that had less memory and cpu these programs use to load up in about 2 seconds.

I did format the drive when I first received it. I then restored it with the installation CD, would that have anything to do with it? Anyone else have these "slow loading" problems running their programs?

I installed bootcamp and put windows on just to test it out. Windows runs faster than ever which leads me to believe maybe something is setup wrong in OSX?

Any suggestion or help would be great!

Thanks for your time,

There is nothing wrong with OS X or your system. None of the applications you listed are Universal (Intel native), so they must be run under Rosetta which will cause a slight lag.

Man thats a bummer.. Its pretty much unusable when it comes to design and graphic work. I work with 20 + windows on some projects and there is just no way it can handle that at this point.. ahh wish I would have known this before I spent 3K! :blind:

Even firefox is slow..

Thanks for the reply at least I know the problem now, hopefully some Universal apps will come out and it will be improved.

If anyone knows a way to improve performance please let me know. The whole reason i bought a Mac was because I heard they will real good in the graphic department and now looks like i am back to XP, but on a Mac..

It's a pain. A lot of designers are waiting until CS 3 comes out before they upgrade their Macs. We've been using Intels since October and it can be very frustrating at times, although on the whole it's not too bad. Illustrator CS 2 is very buggy though under Rosetta.

Try downloading Photoshop CS 3 beta off the Adobe site to get a taste of how thing will run when the whole suite comes out in April/May.

cs 3 beta is out, but this is rather disappointing considering how much Mac's are raved about for being graphics power houses, how long have they been intel now and companies have yet to make proper new versions....

Apple has had Intel boxes for a year available to the general public. The developers have known about the switch for a year and a half and have had access for that entire time to Intel Mac hardware.

Adobe decided that rather than spend a lot of resources on porting CS2 to Intel, they would focus on the new development of CS3. This has been discussed in other places, but it wasn't as simple as just recompiling the code. In fact it seems to have been a really big deal for Adobe. The CS3 beta runs on both PowerPC and Intel processors. So at least that is good news.

I think i prefer that, start from scratch instead of patch something old, always the best way, turns out better in the end.

i am sure the software makers prob had more access knowing apple would go intel for some time.

but wasnt adobe the one who was "supposed" to drop support for OSX, or at least not work extra hard at optimizing it for os?
