I know some people think it's useless but verifying/repairing permissions/disk might help to solve your problems or at least identify them. Trashing preferences could also help. If they don't help then as a last resort a reinstall of Garageband.

how do i do the first part?

You need to run disk utility. It won't let you repair your disk (you need the install disc for that) but you can verify. If it identifies a problem then you have to repair. Permissions you can do.

You need to run disk utility.

To run Disc Utility, go to:

Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Disc Utility.

Once there, follow the instructions to Repair Permissions and or verify/repair your HD.
