I don't know how it's done in Word, but in iwork you can use the inspector (the blue "I" in the upper right corner) to set your type. I usually type my document the way it looks nice then when I'm done, I select all, click on inspector and do all the adjustments. It works so easy by just sliding the bars back and forth till you get what you want.
