Is there anything that is similar to Desktunes but will let you customize it? I really like that it is pretty much embedded in the background, and always stays there, but I would like to have some options as to what is displayed and so on.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Is it in Dashboard? I would like to avoid Dashboard if at all possible.

sadly yes it is in the dashboard... it should be preinstalled on your system
