Mac Mail will not open

I am trying to assist a friend that has a Mac G5 with OS 10.3.9. When she goes to open her email, she clicks on the stamp icon for mail, as well as tries to access through her browser, but in either case, it will not respond. She does not recieve an error, but states that her system will make a grinding noise for a brief time, and then do nothing. The system does not lock up and she is able to get on the internet. Does anyone have any thoughs?

Try deleting the associated plist files and repairing preferences.
