i had a bunch of files on my old PC saved as .wpd, and im trying to get them on my mac, which uses .doc (at least the mac vers. of microsoft word), but of course all i get is a mess of symbols when i open it in microsoft word. so i was wondering if there was a program or some such thing that could convert my files from .wpd to .doc................................. ?

My first thought it to try OpenOffice.org - that can read and write both MS Office and WordPerfect file formats so should be OK. There are a few threads about it, or NeoOffice (OS X native version) on the forums.

I have looked for one in the past, but could never find one.. so there might not be one out there besides a program like NeoOffice or OO

Are these wpd files created on a Windows PC? A friend of mine is "not untempted" to switch, but has tons of old files created in Wordperfect for Windows he wants to keep.

I'm sure he'd love the Mac, but his need to be able to access these Wordperfect files is key. He doesn't want to run Windows on a Mac, either (who can blame him?).
