Hi all,

I just installed macgimp and it works great. Are there any other cool X11 apps out there I should try? Is there a website for X11 apps for the mac?

Thanks,
Rob

Generally speaking, the X11 apps written for other unixes (linux, *bsd, etc) will run happily on Mac OS X. The benefit of this is that many of them are open source or free software. Whether there are prepackaged versions available is another matter, though!

You could have a look on the Apple 'UNIX and Open Source' applications page that has many X11 apps available for free download. Direct link is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/

One in particular you might like to look at is Software for Starving Students, which is a way of easily installing free X11 based software: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...gstudents.html

Thanks, I'll check out those sites. GIMP is okay, but I'm still getting used to the layers (versus objects).

You can get all kinds of X11 apps with Fink: http://fink.sourceforge.net/
or Darwinports: http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/

I have just been through this myself - go with DarwinPorts. It is MUCH more current than Fink, and it works VERY well. Here are the X11 apps that I have brought over using DarwinPorts:

- Abiword - open source equivalent of MS Word and WAY, WAY faster
- gnumeric - open source equivalent of MS Excel, and also WAY fast
- GIMP (of course)
- GQView - an excellent thumbnail oriented image viewer
- GTKSee - another excellent image viewer
- feh - the open source equivalent of Preview, but not quite as powerful
- xv - THE venerable X11 image viewer/editor/file manager
- mc - the infamous Midnight Commander, possibly the best file manager ever
- ghostview - a Postscript file viewer (.ps files)
- xpdf - one of the original X11 programs. A nice PDF viewer
- gPDF - a GTK based PDF viewer - also very nice and more modern GUI than xpdf
- xfe - X File Explorer, a nice two pane file manager - not in DarwinPorts, have to build from source, but this ins't very hard.

My Macs: iMac 27" 3.4 GHz, Mac Pro 3.2 GHz, PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 GHz, G4 Cube with 1.2 GHz Upgrade
My iStuff: 64GB iPhone 5, 64GB iPad4, 30GB iPod Video, 16GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Lion, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS 9.2.2, openSUSE 10.3
