When you go to the DOS mode in Mac OS X and use the scan disk frequently there instead of the First Aid in Disk Utility or using Erase in the Dist Utility, will your HD get slower like defragmenting it although Mac doesn't have defragmentation. :dummy:

What is DOS mode in Mac OS X?
![]() Do you mean the Terminal? It shouldn't make the HD slower, no. And OS X does have defragmentation, that's what it's doing whenever you install something and it says it is 'optimizing' the system. But that's only a partial defrag, there are programs out there that can fully defrag the entire HDD. |

Booting into single-user mode (apple logo-s, which is command-s) and cleaning the caches using Applejack or doing it by hand will indeed slow the computer down, but only on the FIRST reboot. The system has to rebuild the caches. After that it will probably be faster than before.
Just doing a disk repair with fsck will not affect the speed at all. Craig in Texas ---You did WHAT!? Close the Terminal and step away slowly. |
