I have a MacBook Pro retina with 10,9,2 iOS.
I have never uploaded from a Canon g12 digital camera. The reports i read on the internet says iMovie is not sufficient alone and i need a video converter. If so which df several available is recommended,

What are the "several available" to which you refer? Once I know that I can likely give you a recommendation.

There is a company named SWREG -autovideoconverter for ma . It costs $35 plus a registration fee if you have a disk crash and need to recover the app.
I have uploaded from my ssd card and imovie seems to show it well.
As a novice i want the easiest method. So Imovie 10.0. or another app.?

Have you got a link to those reports? Canon's specs fro that camera:
Canon PowerShot G12 - PowerShot and IXUS digital compact cameras - Canon UK

say that the movie files created are .mov(h.264). iMovie, and indeed iPhoto, should import those without any problems.
