cant open onyx for mavericks.

it's protecting me I guess which is good? downloaded it from

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx

but it wont let me open it. is there a place I should download it so mavericks lets me open it?

Right click on the file and select "open". You're being protected by "Gate Keeper" which will only let you open files from signed applications (App store and Apple).
