excels will not let me open previously saved files indicating file contain invalid characters.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Office 2011 ~ your thread does not say? If so read this on an invalid character in title:-

"Excel cannot open this workbook. The file name or path contains - Microsoft Community

Also make sure Office 2011 is updated to version 14.3.9 as there was a fix as the links states.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
