Can anyone recommend a good backup software? I like Backup 3, but I really dont want to have to pay for it, and I dont want to pay for a .mac subscription at this time.

Also, is it possible to run a backup on my ibook, but have it write to a external drive via network?

(external drive is on my mini)

Here are a few you could try:
Carbon Copy Cloner
iBackup
PsyncX
SilverKeeper

I use SilverKeeper myself, although not nearly as often as I should.

I would highly recommend SuperDuper!. It's an outstanding program and it doesn't cost too much.
