I guess I can't figure out how to transfer music from iTunes to iPhone
I have all my music on a NAS which is only turned on when I want to listen to music.

I have a MBP with OS 10.8.5 and iTunes with 11.1.3 (8) and an iPhone with 7.0.4

I want to transfer some music from the NAS to the phone. I selected the Sync Music box on the iPhone page in iTunes. Then I chose Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.

I check marked those Artists I wanted to sync with the phone.

When I chose Sync at the bottom of the tab it did it's thing, but on the phone itself there are only 1 album from each artist selected. It appears as if it is the newest album from each artist. I know that several artists have many albums but they didn't transfer.

    Any suggestions?

Plus, should I even be syncing if my music is on the NAS and not always on? I have this picture that if I connect my phone, have iTunes open, and it automatically syncs then the music will be removed from the phone since they aren't available in iTunes.

iTunes can only sync music that is in iTunes.
If it's not in iTunes, it's not going to sync it.

Why is the NAS ever turned off?
Thought that was the point of a NAS... having an always on external storage for things that won't fit (or don't want) on your internal drive.

Syncing has nothing to do with whether it's always on or not, as long as it's on and connected while you sync.
That note is advising you, that if you have songs on the phone that are not in iTunes, they will be removed during the sync.
If all your songs are in iTunes, it is not an issue.
If they are not in iTunes, how did they get on your phone?

I don't have the NAS on all the time since it is about 7 feet from the bed and the fan drives the wife nuts…so we compromised that it is only on when needed.

I followed the exact same procedure with my iPad and all the albums from the respective artists were transferred. Only 1 album per artist on the iPhone though.

If they are not in iTunes, how did they get on your phone?
All my music is in iTunes. I meant to convey that the songs won't be there when the NAS is off. So, if the NAS is off and I sync then I assume that they will be removed from the phone since they won't be available in iTunes during the sync. IOW:
NAS on - songs available in iTunes - sync to phone
NAS off - songs not available in iTunes - sync and previous songs will be removed

Ahh, that explains it - I don't put any drives in the bedroom.

10-4, that would be correct related to syncing while the NAS is on/off.

I would just try syncing again...

You have enough free storage space on the phone?
