sims 3 wont work on imac

Hi everyone,
I have an Imac i got it in april this year so it is very new! I installed sims 3 (not downloaded) and updated my game and every time i open the game it says 'unknown error occured' and closes...
any idea what this means?!

Im beginning to think the software on Mac is too 'new' to run sims...
