I've installed the dmg file of the software I've bought but nothing happens, at the end of the install it says "installation complete" but when I go to Library/Preferences it's not there and there's no other sign of it on my computer. I've since tried downloading another version and the same happens, it still just doesn't appear.

Any ideas what I can do to make this work?!

What software? It wouldn't install in /Library/Preferences anyway, look in /Applications.

it's a vst plug in for logic, i had the demo version before but deleted every trace of it before I installed the full version I got, but it won't install to the computer at all now, it's not in applications or in the vst folder on my mac...

I'm not familiar with Logic but one of the first places I'd look for a plug-in might be ~/Library/Application Support/Logic or ~/Library/Audio. ~ means your home folder. There are also the same folders at root - eg. hard drive/Library/Audio.
