hello i have a imac 27" 3.1 i5 (2011), the most powerful stock one they sell and during recording a game it bogs down. when im playing the game it runs perfect but the recording of it lags. im currently using a software called good recorder from the app store and im wondering if thats the problem. i also have the stock 4gb ram would upgrading the ram help me?

Add at least another 4 GB of memory, however, I suspect the recorder is what's sucking up the CPU. Open your Activity Monitor application (Applications, Utilities, Activity Monitor.app) and watch the CPU percentage and amount of memory used when you turn on the recorder.
