CFM is a Coldfusion markup file - it contains HTML code that was generated on the server side (similar to a php file). So usually a file like that wouldn't be a format that can be imported into iCal. Do you still have one of those older files? You could compare them to see if the content is the same. Otherwise I'm not sure if changing the extension would fix anything - worth a try for sure.
