Iphoto and pictures on hard drive

I have a lot of pictures on my iPhoto that i still want but there is not enough space on my laptop for more. I need to dave all pictures on Hard drive, then delete iPhoto pics on my laptop to create more space. Is that possible?

I don't want to loose any pictures through this process. any advice?
