Running a .gif file on a MacBookPro ?

Mac Specs: 8 GB 13" MacBook Pro, 64GB WiFi/4G iPad, 32GB iPhone 5

A friend sent me a .gif file but I can't get it to run; when I click on it, it shows me the static images only.

What can I do to get .gifs to play on my MacBookPro or iPad? Thanks in advance.
