I keep getting "Can't connect to Safari."

This happens very often throughout the day. Do you think a different web browser would fix the problem?

It just did it as I was trying to post this!

It might depending on the problem. Give another one a try and let us know what you find.

Does this happen with every site or just some?

Let's reset safari then: Safari > Reset Safari. Its possible that something is preventing Safari from working properly if it's limited to only certain sites that work in other browsers.

Have you tried osxx's suggestion of changing your DNS servers? You can try OpenDNS (instructions here - ignore the fact that it says that the instructions are for Leopard since this will work with OS X >= 10.5) or Google's Public DNS (instructions here).

No, only one. Either will work for the sake of this test (I can vouch for the quality of OpenDNS).
