I was having an issue with CS5 and smart objects. I decided to uninstall CS5 and then re-install it. I used the Adobe uninstall app and then shut down the Mac. Started the machine up after about 5 minutes and placed the CS5 disc in the reader. NOTHING! the disc drive did not fire up. After about 3 minutes the disc drive spit out the CD. Tried another CD in that drive and it opened OK. Tried the CS5 disc in another Mac and the drive fired up but could not open the disc (older OS on other machine).

I recall that I had a similar problem with an Adobe disc before but do not recall what the problem turned out to be nor the solution, although Adobe Air comes to mind???

Do other disks work in your CD/DVD drive? If not...could be the drive is faulty (or dirty)...or the disk is scratched or dirty.

If dirty...you could try shooting some canned air into the drive...and/or cleaning the disk.

Spitting it out sounds like either a problem with the disk (damaged), or a dirty lens in the slot loading drive. If the disk isn't scratched or dirty, try a drive cleaner.

I'm wondering if this thread might really need to be moved to:

OS X - Apps and Games - Mac-Forums.com

since this topic area is for iOS apps (iPad/iPhone)?

It won't be Adobe AIR that's causing it since it's simply a runtime for AIR apps.

If the disc works in another Mac or on a Windows machine, why not use Remote Disc. This doesn't solve the problem with your optical drive but at least it will get CS5 installed.

Sorry about putting this in the wrong place. Still trying too find my way around here.

The drive accepts other discs. The CS5 disc on my older Mac the drive fires up but it is running Tiger and CS5 will not run on Tiger.

There is something with the protocol on the Adobe disc that once it is installed it will not read on that machine again. Until something is changed, I just do not know what to change.

I am going to explore Remote Disc, because I do not know what that is. The Macs are not connected together.

Ummm I doubt it, I've installed CS5 more than once, on the same machine.

Just as a head-check...

Mike what puzzles me is the disc will not open on my Mac pro tower at all. I originally installed CS5 from this disc on this machine.

I had a similar problem with a disc from my CS4 suite, but cannot remember the solution, except I downloaded and update to one of the Adobe utilities????

I have had a similar issue before: Lost the CD's for CS5 which I thought was no problem since Adobe sent the serial number in an email when I activated the product. Next time I needed to re-install I wanted to download CS5 from the Adobe website and only CS5.5 was available. Now here is what I did (Please let me know if that breaks forum rules - I hope it doesn't though): I used a torrent page to download a dmg file of Adobe CS5 - not cracked, no keygen or anything. Just a clean install version. I used that to reinstall and was able to enter my serial number.

What I'm trying to say: Might be a good option for you if the original CD doesn't want to work at all...

Cheers!

Personally, I don't think this is in violation of any rules. Since really, the key is what was purchased. That said, be careful about where you get torrents, as it's mind-numbingly easy to slip trojans into them.

What's funny about this is I've HAD to re-run the install of CS5 on more than one occasion (and 5.5 for that matter) to repair the installation. Wonder what Adobe says about it.

The story gets more convoluted as I go on. As I said I used Adobe uninstall to take CS5 off my Mac. Then as above I used a torrent sight to download a new copy. Then . . . I went to Adobe to download CS5. It no longer exists there. Did find a torrent and downloaded it from there. Followed all the instructions and I actually was able to download CS5 and open it.

This is on a machine that I had used Adobe uninstall CS5 on. When photoshop opened the first thing I noticed was the colour picker was not black and white as default but was with the colour I had used before I uninstalled the program. I went to file>new and again instead of the default it opened as a custom, which I had used previously. Went file>open and it took me back to where I had been working last a few days ago, before I uninstalled the program.

The same problem is still there with the smart objects???

Where on the Mac could all this be being stored and how does Photoshop access it??

Yea, the uninstall does not remove your preferences. I'll see if I can find where they're stored for you, but I've been somewhat busy work wise this well.. this past 6 months lol
