Really annoying Mail problem. Keeps throwing up account errors.

Hi all,

Hi everyone, I am really hoping some of you whizz-kids can help me with this.

I have a new iMac running Lion. I have 9 separate mail accounts set up. My problem is this:

Each time the Mail application checks for new messages it throws up at least one error (sometimes 2 or 3) on a random selection of the 9 email accounts. It shows the little warning triangle with the following error message:

"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “[email address removed]” or try again.

The server returned the error: The attempt to read data from the server “[server address removed]” failed."

I could understand this happening if my mail account settings were wrong but my settings must be fine because emails come through on all 9 accounts. Every time I click on the Get Mail icon to check for new messages it gives the same error on any email account it chooses. Emails are sending and receiving on all 9 accounts but only when Mail decides it wants to do it. Out of the 9 email accounts, 4 are using the oneandone.co.uk servers and the remaining 5 are using my website company's mail server. So, this problem is unlikely to be caused by my email servers. When I was running on Win XP on my PC (last week) I never had this problem.

What on earth could be happening?

I wonder if the account settings are configured, but just not optimal for the server type.

Are all of the accounts from the same provider?

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

Thanks, all I did was use the settings I have been using for years in Outlook Express (Win XP). My mail accounts are spread between two different providers.

Many times the provider will have specific settings for popular clients. Sometimes there are slight variations in settings for server type and mailbox behaviors. It may be worth trying to visit the provider's help site to see if they have articles specific to Apple Mail.

This is true of GMail and FIOS (my providers), I'd say it's a safe bet for yours too.

This has started happening in the last few days to my wife, who has only 2 email accounts. Nothing in the account settings have changed - either on the computer or at the ISPs
