Open Office is no longer being actively developed - it seems to be at a standstill. Besides, it's ugly and a very un-Mac like application suite. What I suggest is download the free LibreOffice instead.

Have you tried NeoOffice? It's the Mac version of Open Office.

Yes, it can do “most” everything that MS Word does. Sometimes in different ways. It includes Writer (Word), Calc (Excel), and Impress (Powerpoint). But it also includes Draw and Base (database) as part of it.

I use LibreOffice for exchanging with Word users. Biggest challenge is margins and tables in Writer; Calc seems to handle most of what I need in spreadsheets and exchanges. (The simpler the document the easier to exchange)

Mellel 3, NWP 2, Scrivener 2.3.1, Tinderbox 5.11.2
LibreOffice 3.6, Accordance 10.0, Adobe CS4, DTP 2.4.3
OS X 10.8.2
