I used to use a program for the PC at home and for school classes called "Crossword Compiler"; there is NO Mac version.
Can anyone recommend anything similar please? I have googled a fair bit and found nothing that comes even close to the PC program.

Here's what Google came up with: LINK

Unfortunately, no real compilers like you're looking for. But scan through them anyway to see if one meets your need. There's also one that's being sold in the Mac App Store. You might give that a look also.
