Haven't found anything as good as FDM on the windows side (Free works really well) I ended up paying for Speed Download.
Yazsoft | Speed Download
Met my needs, allows multiple hits to speed up the file download (use your full bandwidth)
There were some free ones I tried but wasn't really satisfied with the performance.

EDIT: I like it and it works for me but some people have had issues with customer service in the past with Yazsoft. I personally haven't had any problems with the software or CS.

Please stay away from Speed Download. It is crud ware and the very devil to erase. Just let OS X manage your downloads.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
