After installing Lion, when opening an .avi file, it tries to open it with Quicktime Player, but then says it should be opened with Quicktime Player 7. I click open and it plays. I would like my files to be opened directly in QP7, I have it in Applications, but when I open the file and chose -> "Open with" -> "Other" - QP7 does not appear in there.

So, how do I set QP7 to my default player?

First off try putting QT 7 in the Utilities folder. That is where the Snow Leopard installation places it and I suspects Lion expects it to be. If it still plays the file you should be able to do a "Get Info" and assign QT & to open all files of that type.

Right-click your AVI file, select "Get Info". In the box that says "Open with", click on the drop-down menu and navigate to where you have Quicktime 7 stored at. As Slydude says, it's installed by default to the Utilities folder, though I have it elsewhere in a folder of my choosing and can confirm that it works properly. Once done, click on "Change All" so that all your AVI files open in QT7, if you want them to, that is.

If you haven't already, be sure to download and install Perian to help ensure a wider variety of videos will play back properly in Quicktime.

Thanks for that info livesabeach. I haven never thought it made sense to put it in the Utilities folder but never got around to moving it to see if it worked elsewhere.

Yep, it is odd. I've always preferred keeping my apps organized in a logical manner, and it kills me that Apple is now blocking their apps in Lion from being moved (I really don't need Calculator at the root level of Applications). Though modifying the permissions should fix that...

Glad to hear it. I will know whether my problems have cleared later when I try to read some mpeg files that were giving me trouble. they were working then I did a clean instal of SL in preparation for Lion and something went haywire.

FYI… a tweak of the permissions on /Applications is now allowing me to sort my Apple apps. The root Applications folder already had the right ones (Admin: read/write), so I just "applied to enclosed items" and after a couple minutes, it was done.
