Copying DVD to USB Memory Stick

Greetings,

I wonder if anyone could recommend a utility that would allow me to copy/rip DVDs or video to a USB stick. I ride a train for a couple hours daily and would like to use my MacBook to watch movies, etc.
I'm not interested in loading my hard drive with lots of movies or having my DVD drive running until I have no battery charge left.

I have a 3 year old MacBook with Snow Leopard.
