Postfix says it starts, but it says the mail system is offline when i send something

gajbooks is offline
Mac 10.3.9, it says the mailsystem is offline after i start postfix, and i start postfix again (without stoping it by the way, and it still says the same thing) and it still says it is offline. Why is this?
