Microsoft Office like programs for Macs

I just did a complete reformat and fresh install of OSX on my mac and am in the process of installing all the software. I do have the 2004 edition Microsoft Office for Macs (student/teacher edition), but I would like to try something else if possible.

I know of OpenOffice, but before I downloaded it, I wanted to know if there are other similar Office-like apps that are free.

I have lots of documents and spreadsheets I created in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, so I would like to still be able to open them....so I need something that is compatible with Microsoft office.

I searched for "OpenOffice" first and every thread I clicked on was talking about Microsoft Office.

Sorry...maybe I should have clicked on more threads.

My point is if you spend a little time searching, you'll find tons of great information as I can probably say there are no less than 10 - 20 threads in the last 12 months on this very topic.

yep...turned out I shouldn't have put a space between "open" and "office."

Stick with MS Office and consider version 2011 as it is lightning fast and rock steady.

Nah...it can't possibly be $100 better than what I have. My 2004 version of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have yet to give me any real problems...I was just interested in trying something new.

After some quick research I'll probably just stick with my 2004 Office considering it's already paid for.

Try giving NeoOffice a try. It's essentially a better looking version of OpenOffice

And the fact that Open Office may soon be a dead horse since all its programmers have quit and are now working on "Libre Office" makes NeoOffice a good choice. Here's the link for Libre Office.
