In Windows, you can right click on a bookmark, then select open in new tab, but I can't seem to find the same function in OS X Firefox. Any ideas?

You could look into Tab Mix Plus which should allow you to set bookmarks to open in new tabs.

That seems to be a decent option, but I would prefer it not always open in a new tab.

There doesn't appear to be a way to do this on the Mac. The next best thing would be to put select bookmarks in the bookmark bar where you can use the right click context menu to open up a bookmark in a new tab.

If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, click on the FF bookmark with the scroll wheel, and it will open the bookmark in a new tab. It works on my MBP.

Don't believe anything I tell you, unless it is consistent with what you already know to be true, or unless you have taken the time to research the matter to prove its accuracy to your satisfaction. This is known as "doing your homework."
