Gizmo5 and Google

Looks like google is shutting down Gizmo5 as a standalone app for now. (Gizmo5 is a SIP phone like Skype).
Gizmo5 Has Been Acquired by Google
Anyway they have added phone calling functionality to gmail. Free calls to the US and Canada.

I tried 2 test calls to cell phones and the call quality was pretty good so far. I was just using my Mac's built in mic and speakers. It used my google voice number for caller ID.

It works fairly well. I spoke with my son in Georgia over it and the clarity was good. Really need a headset though.

The phone feature in Gmail has been available for some time now. I tried it a while back (I called myself in case it was terrible) and I thought it was decent. As a free service (I don't know anyone outside of Canada and the US), I can cope with any problems.

Hmm. Maybe I didn't notice the call feature as I was using Gizmo5. It had it's own number that you could use with google voice. Problem was the call quality wasn't very good. The call quality seems good now that it is imbedded. I guess you can't call the email though. At least I haven't found anything that indicates you can call in.

Yeah, the Gmail calling is outbound only. You don't get a number.
