I have a couple teenage sons who are interested in animation and design. Are there any apps out there that give a good intro to this? Something that can be played around with and understood by complete beginners? Y'know, kinda like Paint is to Photoshop or like Preview is to Gimp or Seashore? BTW, I'm not necessarily looking for something free. I'm always willing to pay for a good, useful program.

If you can find a download link for it (it is no longer in development unfortunately) then Cosmic Blobs was a great program. If you want to play with 3D characters, and start with some ready-made ones, it's a great place to start. It's designed for kids (and older) so it's easy to use, but the animation part isn't very sophisticated.

It's the only one I know/knew of off the top of my head.

P.S love the avatar you have, I love Calvin & Hobbes.

Hope this helps
