The first backup to time machine can take ages!!!!
Be very patient with it. It can also take longer depending on how much you have on your computer. - Simon Rest In Peace Steven Paul Jobs February 24, 1955 - October 5, 2011 [aged 56]

Well ok, you should be fine then. If it's not done soon, report back.
My back up was for about 800 Gig.... Try my custom Mac Forums Search Engine: Mac Forums Google Search Please use the reputation system if you consider any help given useful (it's the little ✓/✘ on the left <---) ![]() |

You have nothing to lose by cancelling the back up, reformat, and start over really.
I can't explain why it has hung up on you like this, maybe the partition didn't create properly, though it's unlikely. Was the external HD brand new? What do the console logs indicate ?
Launch Console.app from Applications->Utilities and look at " All messages " where the sender column contains something like .backupd Follow that chain back in time and see what TimeMachine is actually doing. That will give an indication as to why it takes so long. Cheers ... McBie " Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler. " A. Einstein The problem is not the problem.
