I have been to best buy and back 3 times switching out the office for mac 2011 home and student edition after explaining my problem to them. When I attempt to type in my 27 digit number to obtain my product key it says that this product has not been activated blah blah blah. I went over to geek squad and he tried it and said to wait a few hours and give it up to a day. Its only been 3 hours but it is really frustrating and Microsoft's customer support sucks. Could anyone provide any insight on this?

I'm not sure I understand what your problem is? In order to even install Office 2011 you need to correctly enter the serial number that came with the package. After installation, you're asked whether you wish to activate. Activation is about as automatic as you can get as it will do so over your net connection.

Also, there is no such thing as a 27 digit number to obtain your product ID.
Where are you getting that from?

The serial number consists of 5 series of 5 alpha numeric characters which equals 25 characters. That's what has to be entered to install. Once the product has been activated you can go to the "about" menu and obtain the product ID.
