Anybody recommend a good download manager? I'm downloading some large files for work and I keep having disconnects or my mac goes to sleep and I have to stat the download all over.

Set your Mac not to sleep. Set the HD not to spin down.

And above all else, DO NOT install Speed Download! This program causes ALL KINDS of really hard to pin down problems.

I haven't seen a good download manager for Mac that beats the built-in one.

+1 for that. There are many examples of threads around here that are started because of issues with download managers. Most of them are because of proper un-installation but try to avoid them anyway.

If you're comfortable with the command line you could use Wget. It supports resuming downloads incase your connection drops.

For just simply downloading a file you would type this (After you've installed Wget)

Change the download directory to the Downloads folder. (Skipping this step will download the files into your users folder instead of the Downloads Folder.)
Code:
cd ~/Downloads
Then you can use Wget, once you have the download link. Usually it can be obtained by right clicking on the download link and choosing "Copy Link".
Code:
wget http://www.file.com/location/file.zip

Wget,
Download Wget for Mac - Commandline tool for retrieving files from most Internet protocols. MacUpdate Mac Software Downloads

Using Wget with the resuming function and others.

Better yet, use cURL since it's included with OS X:
Code:
curl -O <file URL>

Thanks guys. I did have Speed installed but didn't run it so I uninstalled. I'm using Firefox and it has it's own download manager, I just keep using that.

Did you uninstall Speed Downloader using the uninstaller?

If not segments of the darned thing will still be on your computer and may well prevent anything downloading. If no uninstaller used, download again and install, then run the uninstaller. it is a dangerous program to run on any Mac.

I have speed download - I don't know, it seems to work well for me. Pause/Resume/multi-thread all seems to work. I know Yazsoft angered a bunch of people too.

I also have Flow - which seems to work well when moving large files around my internal network.
Flow - Mac OS X FTP and SFTP Client
