Is there any reason to download Adobe Reader rather than just use Preview?

There might be. I had a PDF once that refused to work in Preview that worked fine in AR. I believe there is also some media content that won't work with Preview (don't quote me on this though).

My advice - stick with Preview until you need AR. There's no need to get it if you don't need it.

Preview for me also and yet to strike anything that fails to open, and that is since Leopard and then Snow Leopard were released.
