hi

I am trying to open and watch old camcorder movies saved on my external hd. quicktime tells me it does not recognise the format (mpeg.)

Do I need to buy the quicktime add on for this (£15 in the uk) or is there another way. bIt new to all this, downloaded perian and flip for mac (although no idea what they do).

Cheers,

Try Installing VLC Player:

VLC Media Player 1.1.3 software download - Mac OS X - VersionTracker

That should play it.

They enable QTime to play several non-native movie formats. Flip4Mac for example enables .wmv movies; Perian *should* enable .mpeg. Did you reboot after installing, and do they show in System Preferences?

As suggested, VLC plays almost every movie format known to humankind, so it's an ideal alternative. It if won't play your movie, then there's probably file corruption involved.

VLC should play material from those two apps just fine. QTime, with those additions discussed, should also play quite a variety of formats. QT Pro does more than basic QT, eg. editing, so you might want to consider that upgrade.

If the file in question is MPEG-2, you'll need the $20 MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple.

Get vlc player. It reads pretty much any file format out there. Plays Bluerays flawlessly too

You can also try Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime components which will allow QT to play just about anything.
