I just noticed this on the solidworks website-- they have a new beta of eDrawings available for the mac. It's a nice viewer program (at least on the pc, havn't tried it out on a mac yet) for viewing Solidworks and Autocad drawings. Hopefully this points to a port of Solidworks to the Mac in the near future .

I have downloaded e-drawings (by solid works) to open STP files on my mac, but I cannot open the files. Can someone advise me how I can open STP files on my mac?

e-Drawings is a SolidWorks product. It will only open mechanical drawings / solid model CAD files created in SolidWorks. It will not open .stp (STEP) files. You need a 3rd party viewing software. I run Myriad on a PC but I am searching for viewing software for .stp, .igs (IGES) .dxf and .dwg for Macintosh. Haven't found anything yet.

You might want to try FreeCAD <http://sourceforge.net/projects/free-cad/files/FreeCAD%20MacOSX/>. This is open source & since it is built on openCASCADE, it will read .brep, .step & .stp files. It will also handle .iges & .dxf files, but not .dwg.

Although the latest version (ver 0.13) is listed as unstable, I haven't crashed it yet. I'm running OS 10.7.5 on my desktop machine & 10.6.8 on the laptop.

You should also check out <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_CAD_editors_for_CAE>. It seems reasopnably complete.
